The grizzly is a excellent grinder and buffer combo for the money. I've had one for 7 yrs and no problems with it . If you plan to hollow grind with it get the 10" wheel or your knuckles will hit the motor as you grind to the left,guess thats why I bought a KMG as I have the 8" on mine.Once you progress the griz is always great for shaping and hogging steel.

I looked into building the Wilmont Grinders EERF model which is open source, but the water jet cutting alone would've cost me $600. Add a 56C motor there's another $250. VFD is gonna be around $500. Then you've got tooling arms etc. Realistically the Grizzly was the best bang for the buck at this point.
Shop Fox and Grizzly grinders built on a buffer motor is not a great option. I don't like the motor being in the way of the contact wheel. It's OK for slack belt and platen grinding, but I doubt that a motor that small can't keep up with grinding pressure at 3600 RPM.

The Grizzly is a good grinder, and is the cheapest 2 X 72 you will find. It has a contact wheel, flat platen, and buffer. While it has it's drawbacks, it's hard to beat as a basic shop tool. I have a Hardcore 2 X 72, a Pheer 2 X 72, and the Grizzly. If my Grizzly broke down, I would immediately order another (and I have in the past.)

Feb 23, 2013. #10. You shouldn't have to put tape on a brand new product to fix an issue like this. Tape could also cause your belt to bow in the middle which could cause other issues when grinding. Grizzly is turning into craftsman now. When they start outsourcing, the quality plummets.

One photo shows a simple modification to the idler wheel to make it easier to remove belts.
