You will need to run a screen to keep the material length short enough it does not bridge up in the mixer.

A vertical mixer will grind it pretty fine, but they are not all that timely about it. Square bales or pre-chopped rounds process a lot quicker. It would take 15-20 minutes for our vertical mixer to process a round fescue bale just down to where it would run through the gate.

The model 355 was the mid-sized model in the line when I bought mine, don't know about today. There were several options available; long discharge auger, hydraulic swing-out hopper/auger, and a hay table, to allow grinding hay/forage, along with various types and sizes of screens. I have been extremely satisfied with my New Holland.
The operator's manual for the grinder mixer talks about grinding hay with it but makes no mention of which size screen to use. I thought I would just feed the hay through the hammermill and not allow the hay into the build up in the tank but run the unload auger into a wagon while I grind. You say grinder/mixer. Hay by itself will bridge unless it is fine. I always fed grain into the machine along with the hay and let it mix. I have a new holland grinder mixer but it is kind of slow grinding hay with it for 125 ewes. I thought if the brush chopper would work then i could chop alot of hay at one time then use the front end loader on the tracter and fill up the feeders.
