Re: Local Native American grinding holes? There is an interpretive trail (easy 1-mile loop) at the Mormon Rocks Ranger Station off the 138 ~ 1.5 mi W of the 15. There are mortar holes visible from the trail. The last time I was there, (a few years ago), there was a trail map/pamphlet at the start of the trail.

During our one night stay at Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park (SHP), we explored the day use area. There was so much to learn about the Miwok culture and traditions. The day use area consists of bark houses, a roundhouse, and of course the grinding rocks. Fun fact: Indian Grinding Rock SHP has the largest collection of bedrock mortars anywhere in North America!
